British Made Single Shot Rifle
Here we present an antique Tipping & Lawden “Sharps Patent” Pocket Rifle in 9mm Rimfire, manufactured in Birmingham, England circa the 1870s. The Birmingham based gunmaking firm of Tipping & Lawden was the trade name partnership between Thomas Tipping Lawden and Caleb Lawden, who established themselves as gun, rifle and pistol makers at 40 Constitution Hill in 1837 and continued until they were acquired by P. Webley & Son in 1877. Tipping & Lawden was the only foreign firm licensed by Sharps to manufacture this pocket rifle in Europe.
This example is marked left side of frame in a circle "TIPPING & LAWDEN SHARPS'PATENT" and on the top barrel flat "B.S.GARDEN. 29 PICCADILLY. LONDON" in a single line. There are three stacked proof marks underside of barrel as well as one right side of frame. Its single shot action would have been great to teach a young lad the importance of making every shot count!
The overall condition is very good. Original blue finish/patina and silver plate on the frame. The action is functional, but the hammer notch is a bit rounded and can be pushed out of battery. The bore is nice and reflective with sharp rifling. The stock is in very nice condition.
