Sometimes a company will make something, such as the Colt 1851 Navy, which was a massively popular percussion revolver and an employee of said company will make it even better! In 1871, just such a thing happened. Long-time Colt employee Charles Richards took the well known Colt 1851 Navy and converted them from a percussion system to a breech loading-type cartridge revolver. From there, his colleague, William Mason took the now known "Richards" model and improved it. Supplies ran short of the old percussion parts and what became of it all was this open-top style conversion model of the 1851 Navy, very popular with the Cowboys.....especially one famous James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok who was actually carrying a Colt 1851 Navy Conversion on the day of his death in the mining town of Deadwood, Dakota Territory, August 2nd, 1876....but that's a whole different story....
