Description:
The Springfield M1A is the classic semi-auto only version of the famed M14 rifle used by the U.S. military before the introduction of the M16. The M1A was considered one of the big three along with the HK91 (semi-auto G3) and semi-auto variants of the FAL. The three were popular and in widespread use long before the AR10 rifle came into common use. The original M14 was built as a replacement for the M1 Garand and chambered for the new 7.62 NATO round which was intended to allow the rifle to be more controllable in full-auto fire than the .30-06-chambered T20E2 prototype built during World War 2. That rifle was based on an M1 Garand modified to use BAR Model 1918 20-round magazines. In the end, the M14 still had poor controllability in full-auto fire and was replaced by the M16 beginning in 1968. However, Springfield Armory saw the potential for a semi-auto-only version to become a popular civilian hunting rifle and they began production of the M1A in 1974. It has been a popular rifle ever since, even with the recent surge in AR10 sales. This particular M1A is preowned but has seen little if any use. The action is very clean as is the bore. The wood furniture exhibits light wear. The serial number is 421177 so it’s a relatively recent production rifle. The rifle is the SOCOM 16 model. MSRP for this model is $2026.00 according to the Springfield . The SOCOM model features a 16.25” carbon steel barrel with a 1-in-11” right-hand twist. The front sight is an 0.125” blade XS Post with Tritium insert. The rear sight is a Ghost Ring 0.135” Aperture which adjustable for windage and elevation. There is a forward scout-style picatinny rail for mounting a CQB (Close Quarters Battle) optic. The rifle comes with a 10-round magazine. It also comes with the Springfield-label soft case, as well as the Springfield manual and other factory paperwork.
