Here we present an antique U.S. Model of 1840 Heavy Mounted Cavalry Saber, made by W.H. Horstmann & Sons of New York and Philadelphia circa the early 1860s. The Model 1840 features a beautifully curved blade with a brass basket hilt. The grip is wrapped in leather and braided wire. It was called the “wristbreaker” due to its size and weight. Its successor, the Model 1860, would be lighter. The blade is 36 inches with overall length at 41-1/2 inches. This saber would have been used in the American Civil War by Union Cavalry Troops. The overall condition is nearing fine. Mostly bright blade (aged patina). Solid hilt with tight wire and leather wrapping. The scabbard is good (has a repaired crack on the right side). “HORSTMANN/PHILA” is marked on the ricasso. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
