Description:
Very early Spencer rifle, serial number 3670 carried by Jerome Brown of the 9th Michigan Cavalry.    The ID comes in the form of a letter dated August 8, 2005 by the individual who owned it since acquiring it from the family in the 1950s.   The letter he wrote was to the individual he sold it to at that time.  Interestingly enough SRS has a direct hit for serial number 3669 to the 9th Michigan, one number away from this rifle.

The rifle itself is in great shape with a brown patina all over, solid overall with fair/good markings, no major cracks and minor pitting.  Functional with rifling clearly visible (this is NOT a warranty to shoot....if you want to do that, clear it with a competent gunsmith).  Forestock of the rifle shows significant wear towards the receiver reflective of being carried across the saddle wearing on the pommel which was common (preferable to slinging a rifle on horseback as it was neither comfortable nor convenient to access when needed).   If you like your rifles showing signs of actual usage, this one is for you.

9th MI saw significant engagement with the enemy from mid 1863 through the end of the war, most notably with Sherman's Atlanta campaign / march to the sea in 1864.
