Description:
This is a very nice, all-original Smith & Wesson Military & Police Target Model revolver in .38 Special.  This revolver is a "4th Change" variation and was made in 1926.  This is the scarce Target Model of the classic and well-known Military and Police Model revolver from Smith & Wesson.  This 5-screw K-frame Target Model revolver featured a high-polish gloss blue factory finish, an exceptionally smooth hand-tuned action, a 6" inch standard weight barrel, a 6-shot fluted cylinder, a case colored hammer and trigger, serrated front and rear grip straps and trigger face (normally smooth on standard model), factory checkered Walnut "diamond" grips, and factory target sights consisting of a pinned Patridge front sight blade and a windage and elevation adjustable rear notched blade.  This .38 Special DA/SA revolver was intended to be a more refined and accurate Military & Police model suitable for service revolver target matches, as well as for the average recreational shooter that wanted an exceptionally accurate revolver capable of any number of duties from home defense to taking game to plinking cans.  This particular example is in perfect working order and shows very little actual mechanical wear.  It has obviously been lightly used since leaving the factory 95 years ago, with the finish loss/wear likely a result of careless/poor storage rather than from actual use/carrying.  The gloss blue finish that remains on this Smith is bright and glossy, but as you can see from the pictures it shows scattered areas of finish loss.  The vast majority of the finish loss is on the left side of the frame, the top strap, and the front and rear grip straps.  The original gloss-blue finish still looks great on the barrel, cylinder, and right side of the frame.  The case colors on the hammer and trigger still show a lot of color, particularly in the more protected areas.  All of the factory markings are crisp and clean, and all of the action screws have nice straight slots.  The sideplate shows no evidence of ever having been removed.  The bore in this Target Model M&P is mirror-bright and excellent, showing no pitting or visible erosion.  The rifling still shows sharp lands and grooves from the forcing cone to the crown of the muzzle.  The six chambers of the cylinder are equally as free from defects and clean.  The original grips on this Smith are beautiful, with both sides free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major wear/handling marks.  The checkering is still crisp and clean, the wood finish is fully intact and matching, and both grips are perfectly fit to the grip frame.  The backside of the right grip panel is serial numbered to the gun in pencil, correct for this vintage and model S&W.  The action on this Target M&P really has to be felt to truly be appreciated.  It is silky smooth and precise, and in perfect time no matter how the gun is operated.  The trigger is also exceptional, breaking like a thin glass rod with a very light pull and with no grit, slop, or excessive travel.  All of the controls on this Smith are in perfect working order, including the rear sight adjustments.  This Target Model M&P should function perfectly for many decades to come.  If you have been looking for a nice collectible but shootable vintage .38 Special revolver, this classy and scarce 1926 S&W Target Model Military & Police Model would be an excellent choice.
