Description:
This is an honest and original 1946-vintage High Standard H-D Military .22LR pistol.  The .22LR semi-auto High Standard H-D Military pistol was first introduced in 1945 and manufactured until 1950, with about 150,000 produced.  It was based off of the earlier Model H-D which was made in 1940 thru 1941.  The "H" in the name stands for the exposed hammer, the "D" for model series, and "Military" for it's similarity to the prior H-D model, along with the Model B that was sold in quantities to the U.S. War Department as a training pistol for the armed forces.  Despite the fact that the Model B and regular H-D Model were sold in much larger quantities to the War Department than the H-D Military, the H-D Military is the model most publicly associated with government services.  This is largely due to a highly publicized incident in 1960 in which the American CIA pilot Gary Powers was shot down in his U2 Spy Plane while carrying a government-issue H-D Military pistol fitted with a Bell Labs suppressor.  Gary Powers was publicly tried for espionage by the former Soviet Union, with various images and descriptions of his suppressed High Standard H-D Military published all over the world.  The normal factory High Standard H-D Military pistol featured a factory gloss blue finish, a 4.5" or 6.75" inch round heavy barrel, an exposed hammer, a left-side frame mounted thumb safety, a right-side frame mounted slide-stop, target-style iron sights with the rear sight adjustable for elevation (drift-adjustable for windage), checkered American Walnut grips, a heel-mounted magazine release, and a 10-shot single-stack magazine.  It quickly proved to be an excellent rimfire pistol, well-made, durable, reliable, and accurate.  Today these pistols are sought-after by shooters and collectors alike, with pristine or military marked guns bringing a large premium.  This particular example is serial number 189241, manufactured in 1946.  While this pistol shows some areas of finish wear and the original owner's initials applied in several places, it is still a handsome pistol and it is in perfect mechanical condition.  It is very obvious that this H-D Military was carried much more than it was actually fired, a fact corroborated by the grandson of the original owner.  The vast majority of the finish wear runs the length of the left side of the barrel, with some additional thinning on the grip straps and at the muzzle on the right side.  The original owner had an unlined leather holster that he carried it in regularly when on the farm or hunting afield.  As you can see from the pictures, the remainder of the factory gloss blue finish is still bright and handsome.  As mentioned earlier, the original owner scratched in his initials on the right side of the frame, the first letter of his name on the right side of the slide, and his first and last name in cursive on the magazine. Obviously he never intended on selling it!  The bore in this High Standard is superb, mirror-bright with clean, sharp rifling throughout the barrel. There are zero visible imperfections in the bore.  The bolt face is clean and shows no wear, and the feed ramp even still has some blue finish on it, both indicators of a pistol that has been shot very little.  The action on this H-D Military is slick and smooth, and the slide-to-frame fitment is excellent.  All of the controls on this pistol are in perfect working order, and the magazine has excellent feed lips and a strong follower spring.  We have no doubt that this High Standard will still function just as reliably and accurately as the day it left the factory over 75 years ago.  If you have been looking for a cool classic semi-auto .22 caliber pistol for your collection that you can carry afield and shoot without worry, this one-owner '46-vintage H-D Military would be an excellent choice.
