Description:
This Colt Single Action Army is rich with the American West and U.S. Military history. Originally sent directly from Colt in 1887 to the U.S. Government Inspector, Rinaldo A. Carr, in the original 7.5" barrel "Cavalry" configuration. The stock correctly displays the initials of the inspector, R.A.C on the left wood grip. The initials "U.S." are correct and stamped on the frame. It was then among 205 Cavalry Models loaned by the Army to the U.S. Post Office Department's Railway Mail Service. They were then issued to the postal clerks to protect them from robberies and holdups. This particular revolver, #120021 was known to have been issued to a postal clerk on the St. Paul, Minnesota to Mandan, South Dakota run.
Documentation shows this Colt SAA, s.n. 120021, was then returned in 1890 to Colt or to the Springfield Armory and refurbished and reassembled into the 5.5" Artillery Model from other weapons. Photos show the two serial numbers, 120021 and 70923. The revolver is in "good" classification with some blue still remaining in some areas. There is some discoloration and powder pitting on the frame and on the recoil shield.
