Description:
Serial #21173, 11.5mm (.452 Caliber), 25 3/4" barrels with fair bores that have dark pitting within the grooves. This is a handsome and well-made rifle by Franz Karl Rudolph von Dreyse (the son of the Needle Gun's inventor, Johann Nicolaus von Dreyse), that features side-swinging barrels operated by a long underlever, and self-cocking locks. The metal has developed an overall plum-brown patina, with some pinprick ppitting at the muzzles, as well as around the breech-end of the barrels. Most of the original gold inlay decorative borders remain on the receiver, and the maker's name and location are still legible on the barrel rib: "F. v. DREYSE", "SOMMERDA". The one-piece walnut stock has fine checkering on the straight wrist, and numerous small handling marks and minor blemishes in the piano varnish finish, and is discolored on either side where the barrels meet the standing breech due to the incomplete gas seal. The steel buttplate is also plum-brown throughout, but has moderate pitting and some mild surface oxidation still present. The lock-up is still tight, and the needle-fire locks still function flawlessly. This is a very good example of a seldom seen Dreyse double rifle, and would make a wonderful addition to any collection. Antique
