ANTIQUE Brass KETLAND FLINTLOCK Belt Pistol
London Proofed Defensive Pistol
Here we present an antique Ketland & Co. marked Brass Barrel Flintlock Pistol, made circa the late 1700s to early 1800s in turn of the century England. Ketland & Co. operated in Birmingham, England, from the late 1700s and to the early 1800s to become one of the most prominent and active British makers of the day. John and Thomas Ketland were the sons of Thomas Ketland and grandsons of William Ketland, who had been making locks and guns for the colonies since the early 18th Century. The lock plate is marked "Ketland/& Co" ahead of the hammer. The left rear side of the barrel is stamped with two crown proofs and LONDON on the right.
This attractive pistol was made for self-defense inside point-and-shoot distances. The barrel is made entirely of brass. The frame and trigger guard are lightly engraved.
The overall condition is good. The markings are mostly legible. The walnut stock has been refinished, tastefully so. The trigger guard has been repaired. The vent is a bit warped or misshapen. The bore is smooth with a little verdigris inside. The action is functional. There is only a full-cock, no half.
