Description:
"Serial number 5945. 45 LC caliber with a 7 ½" barrel. This is a cavalry model inspected by O. W. Ainsworth. The metal has a dark gray patina. The grips are period replacements. The “US" and the patent dates on the left hand side of the frame have been removed. This is very commonly found on both the Indian captured guns and deserter guns. This gun was part of lot 6 issued to the US Cavalry and lot 5 and 6 were the guns shipped to the 7th cavalry. Several gun in the same serial range have provenance to the 7th cavalry and the battle of the little big horn. This gun comes with a letter from noted Colt expert John Kopec. Mr. Kopec notates the minor alterations made to the gun including the barrel being shortened and the backstrap renumbered. Very fine Possible Custer range Colt single Action Army!
