SPRINGFIELD M1866 Allin Conversion TRAPDOOR Rifle

.50-70 Made Famous During the Indian Wars

VERY NICE antique Springfield Model 1866 Allin Trapdoor Conversion, the rifle being made in 1864 and then converted in 1866. After the American Civil War, the United States military was slow to adopt new technological advances in firearms and opted to retrofit their enormous surplus inventory of Model 1861 type muskets to fire cartridges. Many different types of conversions were conceived and implemented. This one is named for its inventor, Erskine S. Allin, Master Armorer for Springfield Armory.

These conversions were the main infantry weapon of the West and played a large role in the Indian Wars of the late 19th century. 25,000 Model 1863s received the Allin Conversion, enabling them to be loaded via the breach through a “trapdoor” mechanism.

The tail of the lock is dated “1864” and the front of the lock is marked “EAGLE/U.S./SPRINGFIELD”. The breech is stamped 1866 over eagle. The left butt stock is marked “H”. The top of the butt plate is marked “U.S.” There are two government inspector cartouche's on the left side, and an inspectors mark next to rear trigger guard tang.

The overall condition VERY GOOD. The metal surfaces are still bright with area of light surface corrison, no pitting. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is dark and shows normal handling marks. The bore is in very nice condition, bright with sharp rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. Here is a nice example of an early trapdoor rifle!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 36-5/8 inches.

Caliber: .50-70 GOVT
