Description:
c1840s NORTHBORO, MASS. Antique EDWIN WESSON .45 Cal. Percussion LONG RIFLE

Kentucky Style HUNTING/HOMESTEAD Long Rifle

Here we present an antique Edwin Wesson Half Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century in Northboro, Massachusetts. Edwin Wesson was the older brother of Daniel and Frank Wesson. Daniel went on to found Smith & Wesson with Horace Smith, while Frank was successful on his own accord. Edwin worked as a gunmaker in Grafton, Massachusetts between 1834 and 1840 and then Northboro, Massachusetts between 1840 and 1848 before moving to Hartford, Connecticut where he worked from 1848 until his death the following year.

This example’s stout octagonal barrel is in .48 caliber, large enough to take medium to large sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Rifle manufacture in the mid-19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques.

The overall condition is good. The action is strong; the set trigger is necessary to set before cocking the hammer. Sharply rifled bore. The stock has seen some old repairs in the way of thin metal bands around the barrel. The ramrod is of iron. “GOLCHER” engraved lock. “E. WESSON/NORTHBORO” and “238” is engraved atop the barrel. A great old rifle from a famous family of gunmakers!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 33 inches.

Caliber: .45 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
