The makers have confirmed that this rifle was completed in 1925 and chambered for the .246 (Purdey) proprietary cartridge. It was subsequently rebored to .300 (H&H Belted Rimless Magnum) by J. Roberts & Son, London in 1981. With blued chopper lump barrels struck with London nitro reproof marks and signed “J. PURDEY & SONS. AUDLEY HOUSE. SOUTH AUDLEY STREET. LONDON. MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH’S FLUID PRESSED STEEL” on the broad concave upper rib, the underside of the barrels respectively engraved “REBORED BY” and “J. ROBERTS & SON, LONDON” and the under rib engraved with the importer’s details “WOODCOCK HILL BENTON PA”. Scroll engraved matted ramp mounted bead front sight and matted quarter rib with the rear sight of one standing and two folding leaves each with an inlaid centerline and calibrated from “100” to “300”, and bases for the quick detachable swing off Zeiss “Diavari-Z” 1,5-6x42 telescopic sight. Bolstered and side clipped treble grip action signed “J. PURDEY & SONS LONDON” on the underside and with removable firing pin discs, top lever fitted with a folding aperture peep sight, and sliding tang mounted bolted automatic safety with gold inlaid “SAFE” and “BOLTED”. The side locks each signed “J. PURDEY & SONS” and with burnished pins and a cocking indicator. The action, locks, and pistol grip cap each with a casehardened finish and Purdey best quality bouquet and scroll engraving. The blued trigger guard engraved en suite. Figured 14 1/4 inch pistol grip stock including a 5/8 inch rubber recoil pad and with checkered grip and forearm, the last with push-button release. The underside of the butt with a plain silver initial oval and the barrels and butt fitted with sling mounts. Weight 9 lbs. 5.8 oz. In its original maker's brass cornered oak and leather takedown case, the lid with James Purdey & Sons trade label, and containing accessories including snap caps, a bone pot containing a spare firing pin, a brown leather sling, an oil bottle marked “J. PURDEY & SONS LONDON”, a takedown cleaning rod with horn handle and heads contained in a leather pouch, and a tool for the removing the firing pin discs.
