Description:
ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR ERA FACTORY ENGRAVED HENRY .44 RF CAL. LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Early 1865 production serial numbered in the 82xx range with all matching numbers except the correct original butt plate with matching original engraving which is only a few numbers from it and very probably a factory error. Original factory deluxe walnut stock numbered under the upper tang. The lower left frame tang numbered on the inside correctly. Upper left tang stamped “E” for “engraved” on the inside left upper tang. A rare original rifle with lovely Samuel J. Hoggson floral scroll and game scene engraving on the brass frame and butt plate. Three Hoggson factory engraved Henry rifles with almost identical engraving can be seen in R.L. Wilson’s BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING, pp. 36-38. Another only a few numbers away can be seen in Les Quick’s THE HENRY RIFLE, p. 155. One of a group of factory engraved Henry Rifles in the this range obviously intended for presentation to Civil War notables and veterans from the various states as well as re-enlistment bonuses for the Veteran Volunteers. Very good condition with original unpolished brass. Barrel refinished and with added sight slot in addition to the original. Original barrel address. Barrel serial number has been restamped with the original number over top of the same number. The nicely figured factory stock has an old wrist repair which is in sound condition and the stock has been nicely refinished. Original sling swivels. Working order and good bore. Rare and very reasonably priced for an original factory engraved Civil War period Henry Rifle.
