Description:
MODEL 1842 HARPERS FERRY CIVIL WAR MUSKET AND MODEL 1850 CIVIL WAR SWORD

This is an example of a Harpers Ferry Model 1842, .69 caliber percussion musket manufactured in 1852. The Model 1842 Musket has the distinction of being the first regulation percussion firearm manufactured in a national armory, the first musket manufactured at the U.S. Armories at Springfield and Harpers Ferry with completely interchangeable components and the last .69 caliber, smoothbore musket issued by the U.S. Army. The Model 1842 musket was the primary infantry weapon of both the Union and Confederate armies during the first two years of the Civil War. It was widely used in the first two years by both sides, and certain regiments, like those of the Irish Brigade for its ability to use Buck and Ball against the enemy. and the 12th NJ. who preferred it, into late 1864.

This musket has a standard bright 42" round barrel, 69 gauge.  The lock plate is marked: "HARPERS / FERRY / 1852" in three vertical lines at the rear of the hammer and "eagle and shield / "U.S." is stamped in front of the hammer. The barrel tang is dated "1852" and the left rear of the barrel is marked with "VP" and eagle head.  The buttplate is stamped "U.S." ahead of the upper screw. The left stock flat has a very faint oval cartouche. It has a threaded trumpet head ramrod, complete with a "U.S." marked socket bayonet.  Overall, metal surfaces have a smooth silver gray patina with some small areas of discoloration. The stock is in excellent condition with scattered minor dings and dents. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent. This is a fine example of a Model 1842 Harpers Ferry musket and hard to find in this condition.  It would make a great addition to one's Civil War collection.

The Civil War sword is included with the sale of the Model 1842 Harpers Ferry Musket.  I am in no way an expert on Civil War swords, and from what I was told this is a Model 1850 Foot Officer's sword imported by W. H. Horstmann & Sons of Philadelphia. The blade has a nice finish nickel patina. It has a number of beautifully etched designs and scrollwork on the sides. "Iron Proof" is stamped on the spine. A nice brass wire wrapped leather grip. I purchased this in my travels at an estate sale.
