Description: Back in the day, the Colt New Service revolver was a very popular firearm and versions even saw use with the U.S. Armed Forces before and during World War One as the M1909 and M1917 revolvers. The New Service used the largest revolver frame built up to that time and continued to hold that title until the Colt Anaconda arrived in 1990. The New Service, like the famous Colt Peacemaker, was offered in a variety of calibers including .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .38-40, .44 Russian, .44 Special, .44-40, .45 ACP, .45 Colt, .450 Eley, .455 Eley (aka .455 Webley), and .476 Eley. It was offered in a variety of barrel lengths ranging from 2 inches to 7.5 inches. According to the Blue Book of Gun Values, this New Service is a Model 1917 Civilian/Commercial Parts Model. Around 1,000 of these revolvers were built post-WWI using many left-over components from M1917 revolver production. These revolvers were built with 4.0” or 5.5” barrels and have either hard rubber or checkered walnut grips. Serial number range ran approximately from 336,450 to 337,500. This example left the Colt factory in 1933 and is chambered in the classic .38 Special cartridge. One of the benefits of the New Service revolver’s size is it’s great strength. Before 1935 when the .357 Magnum was introduced, S&W had chambered some of its N-frame revolvers in the .38-44 cartridge, which was the predecessor of the .357 cartridge and dimensionally identical to the .38 Special. The Colt New Service could easily handle the higher pressure cartridge and when the S&W .357 Registered Magnum was introduced in the N-frame, Colt quickly followed suit with .357 Magnum-chambered New Service Revolvers. For safety reasons, the .38-44 is no longer produced to prevent people from blowing up older K-frame .38 Special revolvers such the S&W Model 1905. However, .38 Special +P ammunition is available and these are safe to shoot in any Colt New Service chambered for the .38 Special. The frame, barrel, and trigger have some light micro pitting which comes from the good service the revolver has given over the years. Much of the bluing is still in good condition, with the barrel exhibiting some holster wear, and to a lesser extent, the cylinder. There is some light rust on the hammer. The barrel is four inches in length and is the heavy, “tapering barrel” type. Colt markings are clear and crisp. The grips are good old fashioned Walnut. The bore is in excellent shape. This New Service would make an excellent shooter. SOLD Handgun Caliber: .38 Special Manufacturer: Colt's PT. F.A. Mfg. Co.
