Description:
General Specs: Browning, Year 1974, 20ga; 28ga, 6lbs; 6lbs 8oz, Chokes IC/M; M/F
Serial Number: 2986 V73

The Browning Superposed is one of the finest over/under shotguns in history and one of John Browning’s most brilliant designs.  Produced in plain-jane field grades to the most elaborately engraved and finely stocked shotguns ever seen, production of the Browning Superposed was done in Belgium, running strong from 1931 through 1977 when traditional production stopped.  Here we have a very special offering; a rare Browning Grade 1 Superposed Lightning two-gauge set in 20 gauge and 28 gauge cased in the original factory Airways case.  This FACTORY ORIGINAL two-gauge set, sn2986 V73 built in 1974, has a 26 ½” 20ga. barrel set choked IC/M and a desirable 28” set of 28ga. barrels choked M/F, has all factory original finishes and a full length buttstock terminating in the original factory buttplate.  This 47-year-old Superposed retains 99% factory blue on both sets of barrels, 96% factory blue on the action with wear on the carry point under the hinge pin, and 99% factory finish on the wood with light hunting marks in the buttstock.  The checkering is perfect with no wear showing and is original.  This is a long tang trigger guard gun, built well after the salt years, and with Browning’s improved mechanical trigger replacing the inertia trigger of earlier years.  This gun was also produced with the then new ventilated rib that was silver soldered in place, eliminating the problem of loose top rib found in earlier Superposed guns.  The significance of the 28ga. barrels is notable, as they only sold 477 28ga. guns with 28” barrels in all years of production, so finding a Superposed 28ga. gun is always hard to do, and the cost exceeds $9000 when you find one.  It is obvious the original owner of this gun favored the 20ga. barrels as they show a bit of wear on the bottom of the forend iron.  Having the two-gauge set with differing field chokes provides versatility in the field and the best of both worlds.  This Superposed Lightning is a gun with no excuses, as it shows only a little honest wear, is a buttplate gun, and it has 28” field choked 28ga. barrels included.  The Airways case is the original case this set came in and is in excellent condition as well, a value of $400 in the Browning world.  The gun is delightful in hand, weighing just 6lbs. with the 20ga. barrels and 6lbs. 7oz. with the longer 28ga. barrels.  What a great set for this season’s upland hunts.  We have ordered a Browning factory letter to document the gun, but it will take a few weeks to arrive.  We will forward the letter to the new owner when it arrives.  Thanks for looking!
