Description:
This Model 1862, .58 caliber, percussion rifle-musket, dated 1864, is in complete, very fine condition. Produced at the Alfred Jenks & Co facility in Bridesburg, PA, the musket retains its original stock, bolster, swell-shaped ramrod, barrel bands, and swivel sling hooks. The 40” long barrel surface appears to have not been cleaned. Surface exhibits mottled areas of discoloration and corrosion around the breech.. Barrel, lockplate, hammer, butt plate, bands, retaining springs, trigger guard, rear sight, and ramrod all wear a pleasing, smooth light gray sheen. Lock plate is stamped “U. S. / BRIDESBURG” in front of the hammer and strongly stamped “1864” behind hammer. A sharp and detailed spreadwinged eagle motif is stamped on lockplate between hammer and bolster. An Eagle motif stamped on face of the bolster.

Steel butt plate strongly stamped with “U S”. Musket also exhibits "U" stamped on barrel bands.. Has the original two-leaf rear sight and small blade front sight. Barrel bore has crisp rifling. All lock screws are crisp. Government proof marks “V / P / eaglehead” on left facet of the breech are deep and sharp. Mechanics are crisp.

Black walnut full stock is in very nice condition overall. Stock exhibits "IN" stamped on the left flat. No cracks in the wood save some tiny dings and dents from use and storage. Retains its steel, swelled shank, tulip-head steel ramrod with a threaded tip, all in excellent condition.

A very fine representative Bridesburg contract musket of the Civil War.
