The Model 21 is an American icon with a well-deserved reputation. A strikingly handsome gun with the finest steels, gunners in the know have utilized this Winchester in the field and at the club to shoot thousands of rounds without failure. IF YOU LIKE HEAVY LOADS FOR PHEASANTS OR OTHER TOUGH GAME, THIS IS THE GUN. Offered here is a true work of art, a Model 21 16 gauge built and upgraded by Neil Hermsen, a Master Engraver providing custom firearms to the rich and famous including Bing Crosby, Tom Selleck, Hank Williams Jr., and Doug Turnbull’s engraver of choice when he created his catalogue to showcase his custom work on Winchesters entitled “WINCHESTER HIGHLY FINISHED ARMS” which you can see on Turnbull’s . Turnbull gave special thanks to Neil Hermsen as the engraver of all the Winchester rifles that were built to mimic Winchester’s offerings in 1897. I have seen many upgraded Model 21 guns…some are stunning, and most are mediocre, lacking any detail in the gold inlays, scroll work, and engraving in general. Most have so-so wood as well. This Model 21 is in the first group of stunning custom guns. The gun has been turned into a “FLATSIDE” action, engraved with delicate scroll, 8 raised-gold animals with high detail in the birds and dogs, fine gold wire inlaid to create borders around the action, forend iron, and barrel breech. The English style stock and splinter forend are made of exhibition quality Turkish walnut with burl and smoky, marble-cake figure throughout, terminating at the butt with classy, engraved heel and toe plates and a checkered butt. The checkering is fancy borderless checkering attractively laid out to include wrap-over the wrist and scallop points on the buttstock and forend, and nicely checkered sidepanels. The wood to metal fit is superb, the stock dimensions are modern and shootable, the screws are all perfect, and the barrels lock up tight to the action and on the hinge pin like a new gun. The 26” barrels are healthy as new, factory choked IC/M, with mirror bores, no dents or dings, tight ribs, sharp lettering and rib matting, and beautifully jeweled barrel flats. The mechanics are excellent, this being a VFI CERTIFIED GUN (with 90-day mechanical warranty), the action and forend iron stripped to the smallest part, Ultrasonic cleaned, all parts inspected for function and integrity, all lubricated properly and reassembled. This gun is superbly suited to upland game and clay target games and is an investment quality gun upgraded by a known Master Engraver. Neil Hermsen passed away in April of 2021, so his work is commemorated in this gun and the many others he had the passion to turn into works of art that function and bring pride of ownership. We have priced this gun affordably and the new owner will have instant equity upon receipt. It is a rare find to find a FLATSIDE MODEL 21 upgraded to such a high quality and detail.
