Description:
General Specs: L.C. Smith, Year 1939, 20 Gauge, 5lbs 15oz, Chokes .M/F, LOP 14 1/8", DAH 2 1/2", DAC 1 5/16"
Serial Number: FW176864

There were a LOT of Field Grade 20ga. Elsies made over the years.  Most are nice, but not special, guns.  L.C. Smith 20ga. guns are all built on the common Featherweight frame, but most often the guns can be a bit on the heavy side, often weighing close to 6 3/4lbs. even with 26" barrels.  Most all the Marlin Era guns made after 1946 have the high “SINGLE SIGHTING PLANE” rib and are the heaviest of them all.  Every-once-in-a-while I find one that is dynamic in hand, with lighter than usual weight, usually guns with the lower rib from the 1930’S or earlier.  This gun, snFW176864 made in 1939 is just such a gun.  Being a Hunter Arms Company made gun, she is more desirable and valuable than the later guns that only have the grade inscription on the top of the right barrel made by Marlin Arms after they bought out the L.C. Smith product line from Hunter Arms Co. in 1946.  You will see these Marlin made guns for sale on this site.  These later guns just don’t measure up to the earlier Hunter Arms Co. guns.  This gun, weighing 5lbs. 15oz. and balanced perfectly on the hinge pin, is a rare find amongst L.C. Smith 20ga. guns being superlight and having awesome modern stock dimensions.  This Elsie retains 99% factory case color and original barrel blue, excellent screws, no cracks, and nice wood figure as well.  Most guys buying guns of this nature are shooter/collectors that will use the gun for upland birds and clays.  I cannot think of a better suited, or more affordable gun to do that with, as most all your classic American side x sides in 20ga. have gone up quite a bit in price and are becoming hard to find, especially guns with LOTS OF FACTORY ORIGINAL CONDITION.  This gun has 26” barrels choked M/F, mirror perfect bores, with the barrels tight on face and hinge pin like a new gun.  These guns are going up in value as you enjoy their use, so you won't lose money should you ever decide to sell this nice little piece.  The price is affordable, the gun is attractive and 100% functional.  If you want more open chokes on occasion, you can shoot RST spreader loads to make it shoot like she was IC/M for greater versatility.  Great way to get into the small-bore vintage double gun chase without breaking the bank.  Thanks for looking.

We employ full time gunsmiths on premises and can perform alterations to suit your needs within a few weeks of purchase. Common requests are: -stock bending to suit your particular requirements -addition of any specified butt pad to increase length of pull -alteration of chokes to suit your shooting preferences -lengthening of chambers and forcing cones -darkening stock color with penetrating stains -restoring any part of the gun including rust blue, charcoal blue, bone and charcoal case color, wood restoration and checkering recuts. If you like one our guns but it needs "tweaked", let us know and we can quote you a time and price. Some enthusiasts like the guns "as found" and others want them "just so". We often list guns as found and let the particular buyer choose how they want their gun to fit or look.
