Description:
This Colt Sheriff’s Model must have a rich history but unfortunately, it’s been lost to the ages. What we do know has been provided by substantial research.

The May 26, 1976, Colt letter confirms the caliber and barrel length and says it was shipped to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. Chicago Illinois on Feb. 25,1882.  It was one of 10 firearms in the shipment.

The March 7, 2000, letter from Edwin Wayne Paul reports that Colt SN 77638 was among the First 10 Sheriff models shipped from Colts. Most likely all 10 guns would not have Ivory grips, so it’s probable that the present Ivory’s were installed by a proud new owner.

Now our history pool freezes over. We can observe that this poor Colt has had a troubled life.  The front end of the gun has uniform pitting all over with the exception of the recessed areas. It must have been wrapped in a damp rag or holster for many years. The protected recessed areas suggest that they were not in contact with the corrosive material. The hammer and grip straps do not show such corrosion, suggesting they may have been exposed to the air.

The action is smooth, crisp and tight, much better than would be expected given the overall condition.  The bore corroded and rough, it may clean up with some work, but why bother.

This Colt is in near relic condition, but that negative is offset by the One of Ten status. Overall, this Colt has a uniform pleasing appearance. If you collect engraved and gold inlayed Colts’ you may not see it, but you are missing out.  ITS ABOUT THE HISTORY !

This historic Colt is displayed in a locking glass lid case with a period silver doller. The coin is dated 1882, from the Carson City mint, the Comstock load.

This is a great addition to any Colt Collection or a fantastic accent piece for your office or den. Serial number 77638.  Cal. .45 Colt with a 4” barrel. It will be shipped with both letters the custom presentation case and the 1882 Silver Doller as shown.
