Description:
The Colt Model 1848 3rd Model Dragoon Revolver .44 caliber revolver was manufactured by Samuel Colt for the U.S. Army's Regiment of Mounted Rifles. This revolver was designed as a solution to numerous problems encountered with the Colt Walker Model. The Colt Dragoon Revolver was produced in thre model variations between 1847 and 1860, when the Colt Model 1860 revolver replaced it. All the improvements in design of Colt revolvers were applied to the Dragoons as well to the smaller models of Colt revolvers. Total production of Colt Dragoons including the 1,100 Walkers, from 1847 to 1860: 19,800; plus 750 Dragoons in a separate number range for the British market. This revolver is the Third Model Dragoon which was produced between 1851 through 1860 and begins at serial number 10000. This design had more variations as compared to its earlier counterparts. Featuring a round trigger guard, as compared to the earlier models square guard, and a 6-shot cylinder shortened to only allow maximum loading of 50 grains of powder which prevented the exploding problem present with the Walker model. Most variations came with either a 7-1/2 inch or the much rarer 8 inch barrel. This Third Model dragoon is all numbers matching frame, barrel, trigger guard, grip and original wedge. The hammer functions and the cylinder locks up tight. However, the hand is broken/missing and the cylinder will not turn on its own when the gun is cocked. This could be easily repaired by a compentent gunsmith. The original walnut grips are in fine condition with no cracks or chips and a lot of the original varnish remains. The bore is worn as is common with these revolvers as they were heavily used and this one was most certainly used during the American Civil War. This is a rare and desirable piece of American history and would make a great addition to any collection.  PRICE:     $5,500             We are Antique & Modern Firearms in Lexington, KY, dealer of fine firearms since 1974.                    PH. 859-276-1419         We Buy, Sell and Trade Firearms & Knives.    Have a Individual Firearm,  Firearms Collection, or Firearms Estate to sell, let us know, we can buy or consignment sell it for you.                   NOTE:  No additional fee for a Credit Card payment.
