Description:
VERY EARLY PRODUCTION LIGHTNING OCTAGON RIFLE, .44-40 CALIBER, #100XX, MADE 1885. This is a really nice, uncleaned example with sharp markings on the barrel and a distinct rampant colt stamping on the left side of the receiver. Action locks up tight when cocked. the barrel shows fine aged blue overall with the mag tube more plum/brown, original buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact matched with a Marble 2S blade/bead front sight. The receiver shows good blue heavily mixing plum/brown and showing no signs of ever being cleaned or steel wooled. This is a first model Lightning with the open top receiver not fitted with a dust cover (like later production examples) and has the slot in the front of the trigger guard for a small sliding safety bar which is empty (as most are). The forend is excellent with fine full checkering, fine butt stock showing light handling only. The bore is fairly bright with deep rifling throughout and any roughness very scattered and minor. A hard caliber to find and an especially early first model octagon rifle. Colt Lightnings rifles have become very hard to find these days and this is a nice 136 year old one.
