Markings: It has the standard V over P over eagle proofs and 1863 at the top. The lock has the federal eagle at the center, U.S. over NORWICH to the right and 1863 at the tail. The left side of barrel is stamped "O.B.F". The barrel bands are stamped with the letter "U". "US" stamped on top of buttplate.The left flat on the stock has 2 cartouches, one looks like the makers mark, and the other looks like an inspection stamp.

Barrel Length: Approximately 40” 

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a thick blade atop a raised base, and a two leaf rear sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: Scarce 1863 Dated Norwich Contract Musket of model 1861. The Model 1861 was the primary musket at the start of the Civil War. Musket was designed as a single shot .58 cal. muzzleloader featuring iron butt plate, two leaf sight, iron trigger guard, three flat barrel bands held in place with springs, two strap hooks on middle band and trigger guard. The hardwood stock is in nice overall condition with normal handling marks, and light impressions. No signs of cracks, chips, deep gouges.

Type of Finish:  The barrel has a smooth brown patina ,and all other metal parts have a smooth brown patina.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: crisp rifling

Overall Condition: The barrel shows only light surface erosion, no signs od dents or nicks. No signs of pitting around the breech, bolster, or lock. The screw heads show light usage. The marking are readable. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition for its age.  

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. Strong hammer spring. We have not fired this rifle.
