This is a handsome rifle that has a mellow plum-brown patina on the barrel, with some silvering along the flats and at the muzzle (which is drilled for a no longer present bullet-starter). The barrel itself has a slightly loose fit, and currently has a Lyman globe front sight installed, and a fairly modern Lyman rear aperture sight, installed on a period sight bar at the breech. The top flat is maker marked: ""J.S. DUTTON / JAFFREY N.H.", with "CAST STEEL" below (John Dutton was active in Jaffrey, NH from 1856-1879). The walnut stock has a replaced forend ahead of the lock, and exhibits numerous handling marks and blemishes in the added varnish finish. Some with-the-grain cracks are present on the left side running back from the barrel breech, and there are several pieces of German silver furniture, including an ornate patchbox and a blank oval escutcheon in the cheek-piece. The rifle is equipped with a functional single-set trigger, however the hammer will only cock if the trigger is simultaneously pushed forward. An old, non-original ramrod is included. This is a great looking New Hampshire percussion rifle, and would make a nice decorative display piece.
