Description:
SOLD...Antique Colt 1860 2nd model conversion.. Nice and honest Colt 1860 2nd model conversion or as some call it the “transition model”.. This model differs from the 1st model as this model has the hammer mounted firing pin and the rear sight is a notch on the tip of the hammer spur.. Other minor differences are noted in the excellent book by the late R. Bruce McDowell but just too much to list here.. He also notes that “ all second models are rare because of the limited number produced, but to find a blued second model with any appreciable finish remaining is extremely difficult”.. This one is S/N 194975 and all matching of course.. It is chambered for the Colt .44 caliber center fire.. Has the standard 8” barrel that is original length and has not been cut and “stretched” back as many have been.... The mechanics are excellent.. Crisp and tight as a new gun.. No cylinder wobble side to side and it indexes and locks up perfectly on all six chambers. Load gate spring is tight.. It still has the original ejector rod and head and has not been replaced.. These are often found broken and have been replaced with what ever they could find to fix them.. The bore is very nice showing strong, deep rifling with just minor roughness from black powder.. No deep pits or craters and no rings or bulges. Cylinder chambers are excellent smooth with no roughness.. The markings are fine.. The cylinder still retains about 85% scene.. the ENGAGED 16 MAY 1848 is still perfectly clear.{see photo}.. Over all, the metal is a pleasing untouched medium brown patina.. Never cleaned on or messed with.. There is still traces of blue in the protected areas around the ejector housing and some nice blue on the back strap behind the hammer and some on the bottom of the back strap {see photo }.. Slight traces of case colors on the sides of the frame in good lighting.. Vivid case colors on the sides of the hammer when it is pulled back.. Rock solid barrel to frame fit even with the wedge removed... It has the typical small gap between the barrel and frame junction as is usually found on most of these conversion from factory re work.. The gap looks much larger in the photo than it does with the gun in hand.. To top it off, it looks like some nimrod used a screw driver of something to pry the barrel off long ago.. This is NOT how you remover the barrels on these conversions.. It is minor but it is there.. The screw heads are sharp and clean and not burred up. Front sight is full and never filed on or messed with.. The grips show wear and have a chip at the left front toe as you can see.. They fit perfectly down the back strap and to the frame and the bottom but are a hair shy to the trigger guard.. They do show traces of original varnish.. Some common dings on the butt also.. No other splits or cracks and no repairs.. This is a nice and honest ole 2nd model 1860 conversion with blue finish.. As mentioned, the production of this model is much lower than the 1st models as the Colt factory was using up the left over parts and the supply was drying up fast.. Here is one with a reasonable price for the collectors of these very fine and historical guns that were being used way before the “famous” Colt SAA and the big frame Smith & Wesson's.. Most of these seen very hard use and abuse but this one has survived...  Call 765-728-8049 for more photos or any questions.. $30 insured shipping.. Thank you for looking and check back often for more nice antique firearms I will be listing..
