Description:
Antique Sharps New Model 1863 Saddle Ring Carbine manufactured  circa 1864 for the U.S. military's use in the Civil War.  Serial number 99783.  In 1867, the U.S. military contracted with Sharps to convert 31,000 or so percussion rifles to metallic cartridge breach loaders chambered in 50-70.  Many of these Sharps conversions were issued to cavalry units on the western frontier and were in use until they were replaced by the 1873 Springfield Trapdoor Carbine.  During the conversion process new parts were replaced as necessary, many of the New Model 1863 carbine barrels had to be relined...and components refinished.  This example still has its original six groove barrel with matching serial number.  The carbine has case hardened receiver, loading lever, hammer, butt plate and barrel band.  The barrel is blued.  The left side of the buttstock show the banner cartouche of inspector David F. Clark and is in very good condition as is the forearm.

The barrel retains most of its blue finish (probably re-done during the conversion process) thinning to a greyish brown patina with some light scattered freckling.  The three line address rolled on top of the barrel, Lawrence Patent lines on sight base and New Model 1863 marks are worn but readable.  The case color on the receiver,  hammer, lever, butt plate  and barrel band are strong with more than 50% remaining.  Patent marking on left side of the receiver shows some wear while the two patent marks on the right side are crisp.  Mechanically fine.  Excellent bore.  The is a REAL 1863 Sharps in great condition that surely saw action in the Civil War and the Winning of the American West!
