AMERICAN FUR TRADE ERA J. HENRY & SON PERCUSSION .54 CAL. HALF STOCK MOUNTAIN RIFLE HAWKEN STYLE CIRCA MID 1800’S. Identical rifle featured on pages 154-155 of “THE FUR TRADE/A HISTORY OF ARMS AND TRADE GOODS” by Milton Von Damm. All original and in very good condition for one of these rifles. 48” o/a with heavy weight .54 caliber deeply rifled octagon barrel correctly stamped “J. HENRY/& SON”. Original nickel blade front sight and rocky Mountain rear sight. Walnut stock with distinctive “beaver paddle” shaped cheek rest common to the Hawken, Dimick and J. Henry mountain rifles. Brass mounts and butt plate. Double set triggers. Engraved lock and hammer with all the original parts and in working order as are the double triggers. Lock plate stamped in an oval cartouche with the lock maker’s name “P.S.J. & CO./WARRANTED”. Has all original patina on barrel and the original finish on stock. Nice untouched, even wear overall. Original hickory ramrod. J. Henry & Son of both Boulton and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was one of the most well known Pennsylvania gunmakers of their day as well as a major contractor to the American Fur Company. They were also heavily involved in making Indian Trade guns throughout the same period. Very scarce.
