I had already written my book, The Rifleman’s Rifle. In 2005, I read a blog that asked the question: Who makes the best bolt action rifle in the world? A knowledgeable blogger answered, “Waffen Jung.” I said, “Who the heck is that?” Then I remembered, I had been told about that maker by one very knowledgeable friend several years ago when he was recommending high-grade magnum Mausers to me for a friend. But, I had forgotten and hearing the name again, I googled them.
Waffen is the German word for “weapons.” On their German , I saw photos of amazing firearms that brought to mind the work of Hartmann & Weiss. I had owned one H&W and regretted selling it. But from 2005 on, I looked for and never saw a firearm made by Theo Jung until I found this one, and after a close examination, it did not let me down. It easily compares to any H&W with the same features. You could not say one was better than the other.
We know Hartmann & Weiss because they are represented outside of Germany with their Hamburg and London base allowing their guns to have worked their way into Canada and America. We don’t know Waffen Jung because the maker only has a German address, in Lohmar, and is so-backlogged, the company has no need to expand their market. In Germany, firearms by Theo Jung have absolutely peerless quality and the maker’s only rival, Hartmann & Weiss, is not known to be any better. You can order a new Waffen Jung, if you are in Germany, and if you have seven years to wait.
Here is the best-of-the-best, in the perfect caliber and in mint condition.
The entire magnum action is case-hardened with beautiful colors over exquisite acanthus scroll engraving. This includes the receiver, the bottom metal, the bolt, the breech bolt sleeve and the safety. The checkered bolt knob has a detail with gold wire and both bridges are outlined with gold wire. The bolt release is engraved with a checkered release lever.
This is Waffen Jung’s model “Rifle Magnum” by Theo Jung, Lohmar, Germany. An original Waffen Jung .416 Rigby caliber, built entirely by the maker using his own magnum Mauser action with 24” barrel. The highly-polished and blued barrel wears a profiled quarter rib, dovetailed to accept the express sight with one fixed and two folding leaves (marked 100 and 150) with inlaid gold vertical sighting lines and with unique pyramid polishing taking the eye to the notch in the leaves. The top of the ramp is stippled with borders in three sections and the rear express sight is finely cross-hatched between leaves. The banded front ramp is profiled and stippled and carries a bead and flip-over moon sight. The shoulders on the front sight ramp are incised with engraved dots in rows to break up the glare.
The barrel also wears a banded sling eye and between it and the quarter ramp, the barrel is engraved and gold-filled with the inscription, “Waffen Jung – Lohmar.” The quarter rib is profiled with a transition to the barrels and separated into three sections of fine stippling bounded with borders. In the larger section it is engraved and golf-filled with “CAL . 416 RIGBY” bounded by gold wire. The barrel breech had two gold-filled bands, one ending in scrolls where it joins the receiver.
The tops of the two square bridges are cross-hatched and bounded by fancy gold wire borders. The bridges are machined to fit Rechnagel scope rings. The bolt release or bolt stop is fire-blued and looks stunning with the case color background. The safety is a Jung version of the Model 70 but carries an additional locking lever that slides to the right rather than being pressed down. The letter “F” for fire is engraved and gold filled on the case hardened Rechnagel breech bolt sleeve. The bolt is color case-hardened and the extractor is fire-blued. The bolt handle is color case-hardened and ends with a round knob that has progressive radial cut checkering with a gold-filled curved line separating a row of fine dots running single file around the gold line.
The trigger is top-of-the-line single-stage adjustable and inscribed Rechnagel as can be seen when the stock is removed.
The undermetal consists of a straddle hinged floorplate with trigger bow release, the release is fire-blued.
The select stock was chosen from a fancy walnut blank with beautiful colors of warm browns and black streaks and areas of fiddleback grain, with a best French-polished oil finish resembling only the highest grade rifles anywhere. It is a pure custom classic-shaped stock with European style cheekpiece with a shadow-line.. Checkering is full wrap-around point pattern over the wrist with a point on the wrist, and full wrap-around on the forearm with a combination of single and mullered borders. Besides the ebony tip, the stock is fitted with two recoil bolts, one inlaid with ebony, the other color case hardened and surrounded with a gold ring. Other stock accessories include an engraved and color case-hardened steel pistol grip cap, a rear sling swivel, and a 1/2” German Schaftkappe recoil pad yielding a LOP of 14 ¼”, Weight is 4.17 kg (9.2 lbs.) without scope and 4.90 kg (10.8 lbs.) with.
The rifle is mounted with a brand new Leica Magnus 1-6.3x24 i with an illuminated reticle L-4A rail scope (the rail is the best & most secure), affixed with quick a detachable Recknagel rail scope adaptor that is mated to the integral-machined bridges serving as scope ring bases.
The rifle comes to the hand with ease and the fixed open sight is dead-on. The inletting is superb in the entire barrel channel and the action area is cut clean, crisp and truly professional, The original blue remains at 99%, The original stock finish at 100%, The checkering at 100%, The bore is as new, The overall fit, finish, handling and proper dimensions are well beyond 99.9% of all great custom bolt rifles. Balance is amazing!
This work of art by Theo Jung would not take a backseat to any other maker, including his only rival, Hartmann & Weiss. This magnificent rifle comes with maker’s case.

There are other master gunmakers in Germany like Harry Baeider who build some magnificent big bore rifles, but Baeider uses the H&W action on his rifles, making him an associate of H&W and not a completely independent gunmaker like Jung. The wood chosen for the stock comes from a large selection of hundred-year-old Caucasian walnut stock blanks that are cut from the trees’ roots to display the most colorful grain pattern throughout.
