Description:
Exceedingly rare and seldom seen. Here is a genuine PRE WAR Winchester Model 70 SUPER GRADE in 250-3000 caliber (250 Savage). S/N 9484 with matching scribed bolt made in 1937. Superb original finishes showing 97% Blue and 97% Varnish with only light handling marks. This rifle has had a scope mounted at one time, so there are 2 non original drill holes with filler screws on top of the rear receiver bridge, and a slight scallop at the base of the bolt handle for scope bell clearance.
This early rifle features the highly desirable polished / carbonum blued receiver and rust blued barrel which are in beautiful condition. All of the genuine Super Grade components are present including the correct stock for a pre 1951 SG with its low comb oval cheekpiece, gold bead Redfield front sight, true pre war swivels, stamped floorplate, etc. The Super Grade stamping on the floor plate is unique with little feet on the "A" which only occurred on a few early rifles. There are several very unique internal parts to genuine 250 Savages in addition to the barrel. I have inspected and confirmed all of these parts to be 100% factory original including the barrel, #5 ejector, #7 mag box, specially positioned extractor collar with its "s" stamp on the back, etc. This barrel is 24" with an excellent bore and all of the rifle's mechanics are functioning correctly and typically as smooth as silk. There is the original factory inletted and installed Lyman 48 WJS receiver sight (all matching components) with the corresponding and correct Lyman 12S rear sight dovetail plug. There has never been a standard 22g rear sight installed on this rifle as evidenced by the lack of any tell tale elevator track on top of the barrel. This rifle also wears the superb quality Tilden safety upgrade which is much more ergonomically friendly than the original flag safety and it works perfectly. This safety was also much more conducive to scope use as previously mentioned. It can of course be converted back to the original and readily available flag safety at any time if so desired. One of only a handful of such rifles most collectors will see in their lifetime!
