Description:
#4883 Colt 1861 New Model Navy revolver, 7-1/2”x36cal percussion, 7XXX range (c,1862), matching except for the period replaced wedge. Martially marked and being correct in being without the “U.S” beneath the COLTS PATENT stamping and yet having all the sub-inspectors initials on the metal parts. Matter-of-fact, most of the righteous 1861 Navies were not stamped with the U.S. mark. These ’61 Navies were issued both to the Cavalry as well as the Navy, but only a few hundred were issued in total, and fewer yet were marked …and those that WERE marked generally only had the initials (like this one) with just a handful also having the “U.S.” frame marking. Overall a smooth even grey-brown patina with about 60-65% light cylinder scene and also having some cylinder pitting due to the common practice of soldiers cleaning their cylinders by boiling them in the left-over coffee after a meal. VG markings in all the correct places where those marks should appear. Action is smooth and timing is very good; bore is typically dark and dirty but should clean to be an average black powder bore (at least a 5-6 on a scale of 10). Original wood grips show average wear and chipping to the lower rim areas and there are no cartouches left on either side due to that wear. Overall, just a very, VERY rare and desirable military Colt and a very good example of a military purchased Civil War era revolver that likely was issued and used throughout most of the Civil War. A collector will have to go to a LOT of gunshows, s, and estate sales to ever find a militarily marked “61-Navy, and this is a good one! About VG-VG+ as described $3475
