Smith, Year 1924, 12 Gauge, 7lbs 3oz, Chokes LM/IM, LOP 14" rear trigger, DAH 2 3/4", DAC 1 9/16" Serial Number: FWE68545 Why are some guns more expensive, more desirable than others that are labeled the same? Take this gun for example. They made 5000 L.C. Smith Specialty Grade guns in 12ga., but only a small percentage of those have LOTS OF FACTORY ORIGINAL, UNTOUCHED CONDITION, WITH 98% VIVID CASE COLOR, BARREL BLUE, TRIGGER GUARD BLUE, AND WOOD FINISH, EXCELLENT SCREWS, CHECKERING, BORES…EVEN THE FACTORY JEWELING ON THE BARREL BREECH FACE IS FULLY EVIDENT. Most older guns have lots of drop at heel and comb. Not this gun. It has very modern dimensions. Only ½ of the Specialty Grades had Hunter One triggers. Desirability and rarity of special-order features makes for a more desirable and valuable gun. This fine Specialty Grade, snRE68545 built in 1924, has a lot going for it. All the items mentioned above are present in this gun. Built on L.C. Smith’s Regular Frame and weighing in at 7lbs. 3oz, she was built for full power field loads and carrying afield for upland game. With the 28” barrels and LM/IM chokes she is perfect for sporting clays as well. The gun balances perfectly in hand 1/8” in front of the hinge pin for solid barrel swing and follow through. The mechanics of the gun are excellent, this being a VFI CERTIFIED GUN WITH A 90-DAY MECHANICAL WARRANTY, the action and forend iron having been stripped to the smallest part, cleaned in the Ultrasonic cleaner, all parts inspected for function and integrity, lubricated, and reassembled (a $325 service in our shop). The barrels are tight on the hinge pin and standing breech, ribs are tight, bores are perfect mirror shiny, top lever is well right of center, single selective trigger and ejectors work as they should, and the screws are all excellent and clocked. The original Hawkins pad is one you almost never see as it is only ¾” thick and still pliable…a much nicer looking pad than the 1” Hawkins pads. The bore diameters are factory, wall thickness on both barrels is generous, and the chambers are 2 ¾”. This gun is ready to rock! We have 4 full time gunsmiths so we can change dimensions, chokes, restore the wood, etc. at your request without a wait.
