Description:
BARBAR Marked Antique BOXLOCK British FLINTLOCK .50 Cal. POCKET/MUFF Pistol

Early 1800s Self Defense Belt Pistol!

Here we present an antique Barbar of London Flintlock Pistol, made circa the mid-18th Century in London, England. The Barbar family got its start in England when Louis Barbar, a Huguenot from Poitou, France, fled persecution after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV in 1685. Louis (or Lewis) was a gunmaker who became Gentleman Armorer to King George I & II. His son James apprenticed with him and then took over the business in 1741 upon his father’s death. James made flintlock firearms until his death in 1773.

This little self-defense pistol would have been most at home in the pocket of anyone in the busy cities of London, Paris and Liege during the mid to late 1700s. This pistol is small, light and simple. The “Pocket Pistol” name says it all. They were the "Saturday Night Specials" of the 18th-19th century. Before the Deringer, they were "Gentleman's" or "Muff Pistols", typically, a smaller pistol that was easily concealed. They were favored among the gentry and women because of these traits. Men would carry them concealed in a waistcoat pocket and women would hide them in a hand muff.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is clear and in good shape. The grip is seated firmly against the frame. Legible engravings. English proofs are on the bottom of the barrel.
