Description:
Another “ESTATE” firearm listing brought to you from Dust 2 Dollars who prides themselves on showing the complete gun in high quality pictures along with a detailed description for your consideration.

We offer you a “RARE” Henri Pieper Pre-1899 Cape gun chambered in 12 Gauge by 44.40 W.C.F. with all matching numbers and fine bores.

These Pieper Cape guns don’t show up in the United States very often, and one might ask how they arrived at all. Well here is what we know. Pieper was issued a patent for their construction in the U.S. on Aug 23, 1881; he already held the patent in Belgium. In the 1890’s Pieper made some Cape guns in 12 gauge and U.S. rifle calibers for export for the U.S. that were marketed by Montgomery Ward and Sears Roebuck. The rifle calibers Sears offered were 38-55, 44-40, and 32-20. So our Cape gun was exported to the U.S. for retail by the Sears Roebuck & Co. and sold for $23.45 in 1896.
As far as dating the Cape gun we know that Henri Pieper died in 1898 and the firm continued under a new name of Etablissements Pieper. That company was created on August 18, 1898 by the family Pieper just five days before the death of Henri Pieper. All guns after that date were marked " Etablissements Pieper".
This Cape gun wears 30 inch barrels with the shotgun barrel being bright with very light surface pitting spots. The rifle barrel is bright with very strong rifling and shows some very light roughness near the chamber. As far as his barrel design Pieper did not use the term "Mono-Block" although he was a pioneer in their use. The block was fluid steel and the tubes being Krupp's finest fluid compressed steel on this gun. The barrels have been refinished at some time and are in very fine condition as you can see. The receiver shows traces of the original case colors as shown. The gun functions just fine and is tight on face. The stocks have been refinished some time ago judging by the look of the finish. Both are in very fine condition with no cracks. The butt stock has a ding in the wood as shown, it is not a crack. There is a very small chip at the toe as you can see.
The serial number of the gun is 37823 which is matching on all parts. The forearm is marked "S/37823/12 44", the left barrel "E/LG" "17.5" "5880", between "37823" "L 1244", the right barrel "aar" "proof" "10.4", the rib "H.PIEPER PATENTED APRIL.23.1881." The front sight "Crown / P", water table "S/37823/12 44" / "5880 Crown / P", butt plate "823" with the butt stock being stamped "37823". The Le Perron inspection mark (the one that resembles a candlestick) indicates provisional proof. With the second and third indicating it was proofed at Liège with the “ELG” proof mark that indicates Belgian origin.
Overall this is a very interesting gun and rare to find to have survived in this condition for the last 123 years.
