Description:
Another “ESTATE” firearm listing brought to you from Dust 2 Dollars who prides themselves on showing the complete gun in high quality pictures along with a detailed description for your consideration.

We offer you a “RARE” William Powell & Son Birmingham 12 Bore Pinfire Top Lift Lever Double Shotgun from 1869.

This rare shotgun features the Powell’s patent top lift lever opening mechanism. Rather than the more traditional and standard push lever the Powell system uses a lever that is lifted up to open the action and returns flush when released. There were approximately 2000 of this design manufactured. The high survival rate of these guns is a testament to the elegant simplicity and robustness of the lifter locking design. Some experts still wonder why it was ever replaced with the top lever.
The shotgun is serial number 4255 and was sold to a Captain Raymond Paley on December 24, 1869. It was one to two shotguns he purchased at that time. The shotgun cost him 25 Pounds at the time for a total of 50 pounds for both. The factory records indicate the other shotgun he purchased was returned to the factory and sold to a dealer at a later time. I would hazard a guess this one was a better shooter since they were identical in build.
Factory records read; No. 4255 (7lbs) Our Best Patent Breech loader for pin cartridge with best dams “Damascus” barrels 30 inch 12 bore, Bar locks. The factory letter will be included with the shotgun.
Powell for a time offered a conversion on these to center fire design. To find an original pinfire like this is a rare find after 152 years. The 30 inch barrels have excellent bores with no pitting. The very fine Damascus pattern is still vivid with the steel being silver in color. There are no dings, dents or damage to the barrels. The lifting mechanism functions properly and the gun it tight on face. The stocks are in very fine condition with no cracks and it wears the original butt plate. We have shown the complete shotgun in the pictures for your consideration.

This will be shipped taken down and fully insured UPS Ground to you where allowed for $75. It will be shipped in a foam lined double walled cardboard box that we have manufactured for us so that your gun arrives safe.
