Description:
1st Gen Colt Sheriff's Model revolvers are indisputably a rare and desirable Single Action Army variation.  An honest &  correct Sheriff's Model that is documented to have been shipped to a location inside Indian Territory elevates the rarity and desirability up another notch for the serious Colt Collector.

Experts estimate that 1,000-1,200 1st Gen Sheriff's Model SAA revolvers were manufactured between 1882 and 1927.  This SM, was manufactured in 1900, with a documented 4 inch barrel. The barrel has the two-line Hartford address on top and "41 COLT" on the left side. Underneath the barrel, hidden by the cylinder pin, are the remnants of a "4" from a 41 stamp.  The left side of the frame has the two-line, three-date marking followed by a circled Rampant Colt. Matching numbers are found on the frame, trigger guard, and back strap. The matching assembly/bin number is correctly found on both the loading gate and the frame, underneath the trigger guard,

The accompanying factory letter lists this revolver with a 4" barrel in .41 caliber, blue finish, and type of stocks not listed when sold to L. Carroll & Co. (address unavailable) and shipped to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co., Chicago, Illinois, on April 21, 1900.  Rubber grips were standard at this time.  After an exhaustive internet search for L. Carroll & Co. which yeilded no results, a friend and experienced collector suggested I reach out to the fine folks at Colt Archives and ask if they would mind revisiting the factory records to determine if there was additional information not listed in the 2002 Colt Archives letter (attached).....  The response came back that yes, in fact there was!  L. Carroll & Co. was very clearly spelled out as Lucius Carrol & Company.  As a result, documentation was found in sufficient nature for Colt Archives to re-issue the letter to reflect the Sheriff's Model being Sold To: Lucius Carroll & Company, Pauls Valley, IT.  The updated letter is being processed by Colt Archives.

The condition of this Sheriff's Model is what I would term as, honest, for a 121 year old SAA that was obviously carried and used.  It has a smooth gray patina and minor to moderate pitting. The heavily worn grips match the condition of the revolver perfectly, and are impecably fit, as from the factory. Mechanically excellent.

The rarity of Sheriff's Model SAAs means they are difficult to find in any condition. Add in the rarity associated of being shipped to the Indian Territory, and you have a rare variation, highly desirable and iconic Colt revolver.
