Description:
***   SOLD   ***   This handsome Westley Richards Best Droplock 12 bore two-barrel set sports vivid case coloring, highly figured European walnut, the signature scalloped frame, and deep bluing. It has a single selective trigger with the selector mounted conveniently next to the trigger. Automatic safety. Cased in its original fitted leather case with maker’s label and some accessories. This gun, no. 16967, was made with 30” nitro barrels in 1907 – 08 during the reign of King Edward VII. The 28” nitro barrels were added by Westley Richards a few years later after King George V ascended to the throne in 1910.   ***   To demonstrate the care and attention to detail that WR built into this gun it weighs the same with either the 30” or 28” barrels in place! 6lb 9oz. Both sets of barrels are chambered and nitro proofed for 2-3/4” cartridges. Thirty Inch Barrels: The raised solid game style rib on the 30” barrels is inscribed “Westley Richards 178 New Bond St London Gunmakers By Special Appointment to His Majesty King Edward VII.” The right barrel is bored 0.737 with a constriction of 0.010 for Quarter choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.027. The left barrel is also bored 0.737 and has a constriction of 0.023 for Half choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.028. There is some very light pitting in the bores of both barrels but nothing to worry about as there is plenty of wall thickness. There is also a small amount of freckling on the top of the righthand barrel near the muzzle. Twenty-Eight Inch Barrels: The raised solid game style rib on the later 28” barrels is inscribed “Westley Richards 178 New Bond St London Gunmakers By Appointment to His Majesty King George V Rex Et Imp.” The right barrel is bored 0.739 with a constriction of 0.013 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.024. The left barrel is bored 0.738 and has a constriction of 0.036 for Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.028. The bluing on both sets of barrels is excellent except for the aforementioned freckling on the top of the right barrel in the 30” set.   ***   The Prince of Wales stock and splinter forearm are made of highly figured European walnut with crisp checkering. The initial plate carries the engraved initials of “R.D”. Stock dimensions are 14” from the single trigger over engraved heel and toe plates by 1-1/2” by 2-1/16”. Cast off for the righthand shot. An Orvis leather slip-on pad is included to add to the length of pull if required by the new owner. There are a few handling marks on the stock.  ***   The rare and handsome Best Droplock is cased in its original leather case with maker’s label. It is fitted for both sets of barrels and includes a cleaning rod and cleaning tool heads. The exterior displays the owner’s name. The case shows wear inside and out typical of a period case that is over a hundred years old. The straps are worn and need to be replaced.   ***   This somewhat unique Best Droplock is a beautiful and great handling game gun made at the height of Britain’s imperial power. You just don’t see many like it. It is a special gun. Don’t let it get away. ***   I am an FFL and will need a signed copy of your dealer’s FFL license. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period and will only accept returns at buyer’s expense.   ***   Come and see this great double and other fine firearms at the MacNab booth at the Vintage Gunners Cup September 15th --- 18th, 2021 at Hausmann’s Hidden Hollow Sporting Clays in Friendsville, PA.
