Here we have an attractive and capable 1930’s vintage Single Barrel Trap gun from one of the most iconic English gunmakers, Westley Richards of London.  Many shooters who enjoy a round of trap on occasion will be intrigued by this high-quality trap gun.  Avid trap shooters that have become accustomed to the best competitive trap guns available for their sport will be surprised to learn that the vintage single barrel trap guns from the great British and American gunmakers are actually equal to or superior to the modern trap guns.  How you ask?  First, the barrel is a chopper lump design, meaning the barrel lug and the barrel itself was made of one solid piece of top-quality steel…no monobloc or brazed lumps to come loose.  Second, the barrel triple locks to the action with double underlug bolts and an elaborate doll’s head rib extension with a pivoting locking bolt at the doll’s head.  The doll’s head is inset into the action eliminating any side to side movement during firing.  Third, the barrel was overbored to .739 even back in the early 1900’s, allowing a shorter shot string.  Fourth, the chokes are a very long and gradually taper over almost 4” before reaching the final constriction at the muzzle, thus allowing a more gentle constriction of the shot column with fewer flattened or damage pellets that become “fliers” once they leave the barrel.  Last, the forend is secured to the barrel with two forend lugs to spread the work over a greater area.  These advanced features required much hand-fitting and tuning to produce a competitive gun that would win at the trap line all around the world.  This gun, snT5679, was proofed in Birmingham England for heavy 1 ¼ ounce loads delivered from a 2 ¾” factory chamber.  THE GUN IS STILL IN PROOF.  The gun weighs 8lbs. 6oz. and balances just forward of the hinge pin to keep the momentum of the barrels moving with the target.  Mechanics aside, Westley Richards is famous for building attractive, wonderfully HAND ENGRAVED guns with workmanship that just is not duplicated in today’s world of moderately priced guns.  The deeply cut, background shaded open English scroll is perfectly executed, covers most of the frame and trigger guard, as well as a wedge of engraving on the barrel breech.  You would have to spend well over $20K to get a Krieghoff trap gun so engraved.  The barrel is tight on the breech face and hinge pin, the ejector is strong and timed, the trigger is crisp and breaks at 4lbs.  The mechanics are excellent, this being a VFI CERTIFIED GUN with a 90-day mechanical warranty, having been stripped to its smallest part, Ultrasonic cleaned, all parts inspected for function and integrity, lubricated properly and reassembled.  The gun is ready for another 100 years of use.  The Monte Carlo stock is designed to move recoil away from your face and into your shoulder and is wonderfully figured walnut.  Look closely and you will see a very attractive, affordable, capable competitive trap gun that will turn heads at the traps and win tournaments if you are doing your job.  The gun is stoutly built for high-volume shooting and is not meant to be babied.  She is meant to be shot.  Thanks for looking, and don’t hesitate to add this to your collection of fine shotguns.
