Description:
This is my favorite Volcanic that I’ve had the fortunate pleasure of handling. This example has everything one could imagine. This example was no doubt manufactured by Smith & Wesson intending it to be used for an Exhibition display piece. I have a suspicion that this is the gun that Smith & Wesson won the gold medal in Baltimore in 1854, that gold medal is known and is featured in the Volcanic book and lists being in the Roy Jinks collection. One of the reasons I believe this, this engraving was no doubt executed by the same engraver who engraved one of the very few rifles. It's the same flow, same style, same pressure, same motifs, similar figures. The one specific rifle that the engraving lines up identically with, was indeed an exhibition gun displayed at that said exhibition. I can't 100% say for certain but if you can virtually put two and two together, it virtually gives you the almost complete certainty that this was indeed the Gold Medal Award winning Pistol for Smith & Wesson, with that being said, this is truly a magnificent gun that could possibly be Smith & Wesson's very first Gold Medal Award Winning Exhibition pistol. This Volcanic is likely the most deluxe engraved Smith & Wesson Large Frame Volcanic pistol known to exist and as of right now is The Only Known such example. There aren’t any other aside from a gold inlaid one known that could be close but I also own that Gold Inlaid example and wouldn’t put it in the same tier. This is a top tier Volcanic. This is in the Top 10 of Smith & Wesson Volcanics known. This gun features traces of original finish on the top part of the frame, the barrel shows finish in protected areas. The engraving is spectacular. The left side frame shows a buck, while the right side shows a hunting scene, ultimately the hunter is aiming at the little rabbit on the forward part of the frame. Mechanically works but the lever is a bit loose. This Volcanic is featured, photographed and described in the "The Volcanic Book". This is truly a museum quality piece and something that would be impossible to find another of. Truly a one of a kind Smith & Wesson Volcanic pistol with superb investment quality.
