Description:
ON HOLD. This is a nice early example of a Colt Model 1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver in .31 Caliber with desirable 6 inch octagonal barrel and 5 Shot cylinder.  Serial number on this one is in the 18,000 serial range with all matching numbers including wedge, barrel, frame, loading lever, arbor pin, cylinder, trigger guard, backstrap, and grips. See Photos.  Since roughly the first 14,000 serial numbers were Colt 1848 Baby Dragoons, the 18,000 range is a pretty low number for an 1849 Pocket making this early 2nd year production in 1851. Early features include the small brass trigger guard, small "V" loading port on the right side of the barrel lug, exposed (non-counter-sunk) loading lever screw, and of course the early 2 line New York Barrel Address.  These early 49's were very popular during the California Gold Rush and the early West. Many saw use in the American Civil War.  Being Pre-1861, it could have easily have seen use by either the Confederacy or the Union as there as a great deal of early photographic evidence of soldiers brandishing these prized personal sidearms.  Overall, this Colt is in NRA Antique Fine Condition with 97% original silver plating on the backstrap and trigger guard. Sam Colt did some absolutely fabulous silver plating on his early guns compared to the ones made in the 1860's which were so thin by the late 1860's that you can find nearly mint unfired examples today that have virtually no silver left.  That wasn't the case in the 1850's as you can see on this gun...it has nearly all of it despite having seen some honest use.  The early light walnut grips are in Fine Condition retaining 95% original varnish with no chips, cracks, or repairs.  Grips show some light handling wear but are in remarkable shape for their age.  The barrel, frame, and cylinder are mostly a smooth even brown patina with traces of original blue visible on the flats of the barrel if you get them in the right light.  Cylinder and Frame have turned brown with nice markings.  The cylinder has 95% of its original stagecoach holdup roll engraved scene intact with a number of small nicks and abrasions but nothing deep or too distracting (see photos).  The action is in good order with half and full cock notches working.  Cylinder still indexes properly and the wedge still holds the barrel tightly to the frame.  Very Good bore.   It's hard to believe this Model 1849 is 170 years old and has survived in such nice condition.  This was one of the first Colt revolvers made with the rounded trigger guard as 1851 when this was built saw the last of the large squareback 2nd Model Dragoons and early 1851 Squareback 2nd Model Navies produced.  Antique, Pre-1898. No FFL required.  No sales to NYC, DC, NJ, Chicago, or HI.  No International Sales.  Buyer must be 21 years of age and legal to purchase.  $25.00 shipping. ON HOLD.
