Thomas Gill (active 1744-1801), and later his son John, worked in London at 11 Charing Cross, 22 Norfolk St., and No. 83 St. James’s St. He was a noted gunmaker but also known for all kinds of metal working and advertised the superiority of the use of his father’s improved method of tempering. He produced some of his wares for the Board of Ordnance and the military, including some trade pistols for North America. This pistol has a steel barrel with nice contours. It has a multifaceted breech area that transitions to round. Full length stock. Nice hand-checkering. The pommel cap is of engraved brass. The trigger guard and side plate are also of brass and finely engraved. There is a small silver placard on the top of the grip with the initials “EAB”. The top of the barrel is engraved “London” in script. Originally stamped with pre-1813 London proofs, you can observe that there are also Birmingham proofs partially stamped over them. The lock is simply signed “Gill”. This is a very classy fighting pistol that was clearly used and in fantastic condition. The overall condition is near fine. Original finish/patina. The action is excellent and crisp. The stock is smooth and solid with nice hand-checkering. This is a very nice example of a pistol that may have been used by a British military officer or even found its way to the colonies in the 18th Century. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 9 inches. Caliber: .65 Flintlock Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
