Description:
This is a scarce and highly desirable Model 1855 .58 caliber Maynard tape primed rifle-musket manufactured at the Harper's Ferry National Armory in 1859. It has an 1858 dated lock with an 1859 dated Harper's Ferry proofed barrel, and brass nose cap. So what we have here is a gun manufactured in early 1859 with the new short base 2 leaf rear sight and assembled with leftover 1858 lock and brass nose cap from the guns assembled late in 1858. It is all original and matching in condition and has not been cleaned or polished so the metal still shows some spotty brown aged patina and specks of scattered light pitting, but nothing serious. The barrel breech is fairly clean and the 1859 date is clear. The .58 caliber rifled bore is very fine. The complete Maynard tape primed lock mechanics are excellent. It has 2 nice original Harper's Ferry cartouches on the excellent stock. The stock has not been cleaned or sanded and still has sharp edges with its original oil finish, there are no chips, cracks, or breaks in the stock. This gun would rate about fine as is, but could be cleaned to excellent if so desired. Only about 12,000 of these Model 1855 muskets were manufactured at the Harper's Ferry Arsenal and they undoubtedly saw hard use early on in the Civil War, so nice untouched examples like this one are now hard to find.
