Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Rare & Historical Civil War Model 1860 Spencer Lever Action Repeating Military Rifle, Bayonet, & Buckle Issued to Hiram Yattaw, Company A, 118th New York Volunteer Infantry, .52 Rimfire Cal (.56-56), mfg. circa 1864. This is one of the most fantastic Civil War arms we have offered in quite some time. It comes directly from the family of the soldier who carried it during the American Civil War with solid provenance and remains in absolutely 100% original totally untouched condition. We acquired this rifle, bayonet, and buckle in our shop from a Mr. David M D'Amato, aged 82, who's great-great grandfather Hiram Yattaw had carried during the Civil War and subsequently handed down through his family. We were able to research the genealogy through Ancestry and confirm that Hiram Yattaw was in fact Mr. D'Amato's great-great grandfather and further research showed that the 118th New York were issued Spencer repeating rifles in September 1864. Hiram Yattaw was born in Vergennes, Vermont in April 1844 and enlisted at the age of 18 with the 118th New York in Queensbury on July 30th 1862 (interestingly records show Hiram's last name originally spelled "Yetto" before the war, "Yatto" during the war, and "Yattaw" for the remainder of his life). He was wounded in the leg at Hanover Junction on July 4th 1863 but continued to serve with the regiment and was mustered out in Richmond on June 13th 1865. The 118th New York, or the "Adirondack Regiment" as they were called, fought at Petersburg and Cold Harbor among other engagements, and took it's heaviest losses at Drewry's Bluff. Famously every man in the color guard was over 6ft tall and the 118th had the distinction of being the very first regiment to march into Richmond after the Confederate capital fell in April 1865. Hiram worked as a cabinet maker in his later years and died June 7th 1905. The rifle was handed down from Hiram to his son James A. Yattaw, from James to his daughter Beatrice A. Yattaw, and lastly from Beatrice to her nephew David M. D'Amato. Incredibly this rifle had been kept by the same family for 157 years and has never been available for purchase until now. The metal has a totally untouched rust/plum patina overall with some very fine surface oxidation beginning to form (NOT pitting) which would easily remove with careful proper cleaning to yield a perfectly smooth surface throughout yet because it is so pure and honest we decided to leave that choice to the next owner. Vivid traces of case color can still be seen within the action when the lever is opened. The stock has a smooth worn appearance overall with a lovely blackened patina that can only be achieved from over a century of having never been cleaned. Both military inspector's cartouches are clearly visible and aside from a few typical handling mars miraculously the wood has survived with no cracks, chips, or repairs. Original buttplate with loading tube, hammer, lever, trigger, screws, barrel bands & springs, sling swivels, post front sight which doubles as a bayonet lug, and flip-up ladder rear sight. Serial number "23931" is stamped ahead of the wrist with the Spencer address faintly visible atop the frame. The bayonet matches the rifle perfectly and fits tightly due to the metal being dry and uncleaned. Likewise the brass "US" belt buckle remains untouched with a dull mustard color. The action is crisp and functions flawlessly. The bore shows bright sharp rifling front to back with light surface rust just beginning to form near the muzzle and a few small spots scattered throughout. With a proper cleaning I think the bore will look excellent. A signed letter of provenance from Mr. D'Amato is included and we will gladly provide an additional letter from Jeremiah Johnson Trading attesting to the history and our purchasing directly from the family. A very rare opportunity to own a newly discovered and positively identified Civil War Spencer rifle that has never been available to the public. Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique firearms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
