Description: Hammerless Sidelocks - Built in 1889 this gun was given a new life with new barrels proofed in London in 1984 and they are in excellent condition. Francis Lovel, owner of Atkin Grant and Lang noted the initials FW on the barrel loop which would refer to Frank Wyman who was well respected gunmaker near Reading who was active until quite recently. The records from the original purchase show it was for (hard to read) the Honorable S. Finch Hatten. Denys did carry the title Honorable and was a noted sportsman who was made famous by the wonderful novel "Out of Africa." See ://en.wikipedia/wiki/Denys_Finch_Hatton for a fascinating history. He would have been only two when this gun was ordered so it was probably ordered by his father or uncle. It would be great fun to research this further. Great stock dimensions for many this will make a wonderful fun in the field for its new owner. *** Note: To see this gun with high resolution photos and a zoom-in feature, go to the vintagedoubles main site and search for the gun ID: 4473 or browse the main site to see our full gun collection. |
