Description:
Scarce Early Production Colt Model 1892 Double Action Revolver made for the Civilian Market. This one is in the low 12,000 serial range with the US Army basically getting everything under 10,000 at which point the Civilian production begins.    This one has the scarce first version checkered hard rubber grips with the COLT AND 1892 Date located underneath. See Photos.  Early 4 1/2" Barrel, Six Shot Cylinder in .38 Long Colt, with their incredible highly polished charcoal royal blued finish.  Overall Condition Grades to NRA Antique Excellent with 95% original Colt charcoal bluing on the frame, 93% on the frame and cylinder, 85% on the frontstrap and bottomstrap, and 50% remaining on the back strap.  The trigger and top of the hammer still shows 90% of its original fire blue.  Hammer profiles still retain 70% of their original bright polish with the balance turning to a light brown patina.  Original front sight has nearly all of its original blue and has never been trimmed down.  The "1892" Grips are in excellent condition with no sharp checkering, no chips, and are numbered to the gun.  Action still cycles in double and single action modes.  Bore is excellent.  These early Civilian DA's pretty scarce, the reason being "phantom guns" as Colt was notorious for skipping over large groups of serial numbers presumably reserved for military contracts...either that or to keep management of Smith and Wesson up at night. That said, you'll find the 10,000-20,000 serial block to be a mixture of Civilian Models (mostly 10-15,000) and identical models that sold to the United States Navy in the 16,000 and 18,000 ranges...including the DA future President Teddy Roosevelt carried up San Juan Hill in 1898. After they got close to 20,000, Colt literally skipped 40,000 numbers and produced a run of DA's for the US Army in the 60,000 range followed by a second run of Civilian guns starting around the 70,000-100,000 ranges and then the Army had contracts so Colt sealed off the 100,000 to 110,000 block for the Army again...followed by some more Civilian made guns in the 110,000 and then there is the cut off for Antique Pre-1898 at roughly 115,000.  That is why I say these early Civilian guns, particularly the very early 1892's are hard to come by because Colt's Serial Numbers on these early New Army and New Navy DA's are misleading.  One would think there are 115,000 Antique Colt DA's out there but there are really more like half that in terms of actual revolvers produced.  That said, this is a nice investment grade example of one of the first New Army Civilian DA's as well as being one of the early 1890's forerunners to the Modern Double Action Revolver.  Antique, Pre-1898.  No FFL Required under Federal Law.  Know your state laws before contacting us.  We cannot ship this to NY, NJ, DC, Chicago, or HI.  Sorry, no international sales.  Buyer must be 21 years of age and legal to purchase.  All items are sold as antique collectibles only.  $25.00 shipping.
