Description:
MGM Movie Prop Gun CIVIL WAR WHITNEY ARMS P1853 ENFIELD RifleMusket WESTERN

With Leather Padded Fencing Bayonet!

Here we present an antique Whitney Arms Co. Enfield Pattern 1853 Rifle-Musket, made circa 1859-62 in New Haven, Connecticut. The P53 was the British Military Ordnance Board’s choice for adoption as the primary long arm in 1853. It was considered the apex European military gun of that time, introduced by the British War Department after several studies to improve the calibers and the dimensions of the previous models. However, it kept the same general appearance of the earlier pattern 1851. The overwhelming majority of P53 Enfield Rifles were made by commercial gun makers in Birmingham and London under contract. This gun features a ladder rear sight with a slider assembled on a base with steps and steel barrel bands. It is also equipped with two sling swivels. Whitney only manufactured around 3,500 of these rifle-muskets as “Good & Serviceable Arms”—sort of a line unto itself in which Whitney bought surplus parts off the market and completed the muskets in-house—with many ending up in Confederate hands as they were sold to various states before the war began.

This movie prop musket is marked “MGM” and “CB 19” on the barrel and “WESTERN” on the stock. It may have been used in two of Metro Goldwyn Mayer’s most famous movies, including “Gone With the Wind” and “The Red Badge of Courage”, both Civil War movies. On May 3, 1970, the house David Weiz Company held the Metro Goldwyn Mayer . An individual named Walter O’Conner, who was employed by the house, became one of, if not the first collector to identify and actively collect “movie memorabilia firearms” in the Hollywood area. Mr. O’Connor specifically targeted a musket in that that was marked “MGM CB 28”. It is documented that that particular musket was used by Audie Murphy in the 1951 production of “Red Badge of Courage”. Audie Murphy, of course was America’s most decorated soldier in World War II whose feats are an American legend.

The overall condition is rough. It is missing its barrel bands and rear sight. The action is strong and functional. The bore has nice rifling. The stock shows a great amount of use and perhaps even a blow from a blade between the foremost and middle barrel band spots. The bayonet has a padded leather cover on it made for practicing or fencing. It is marked for Rock Island Arsenal and is dated 1905. A neat piece of history!
