Scarce CIVIL WAR Antique STARR 1858 NAVY Revolver
Early Double Action Revolver with Pearl Inlay!
Here we present an antique Starr Arms Company Model 1858 Double Action Navy Revolver, made circa 1860 in New York. Though not nearly as many of these were made as the Colt 1860s or Remington 1858s, the Starr models represent probably the third-most issued revolver during the American Civil War. Requiring all manner of firearms during the Civil War, the U.S. government commissioned the Starr Arms Company to produce a Single Action version of its Double Action revolver. Both versions, along with the DA Navy, were taken on by the North with roughly 47,454 total produced. These saw the most use in the Western Campaign with three sub-variants of the base design, with those being the Double Action Navy of 1858 in .36 caliber, the Double Action Army of 1858 in .44 caliber, and the Single Action Army of 1863 in .44 caliber. Production numbers reached 3,000, 21,454, and 23,000 respectfully. This gun would have been used most widely by cavalrymen. It differed tremendously from the other revolvers in its class by being double actioned. The large, curved trigger cocked the hammer and revolved the cylinder, and, at the end of travel, tripped the trigger at the back of the trigger guard, firing the revolver.
Ironically, despite being ahead of its time, the Starr Model 1858 Double Action Revolver was sidelined when the U.S. government asked for a revised single action version for the troops, which culminated in the Starr Model 1863 Single Action Revolver. Eben T. Starr, the inventor, was also responsible for the Starr Cavalry Carbine, which was also purchased by the Union during the war.
This Navy revolver is scarce with only about 3,000 made; 2,250 went to the Union military, though many or most were not marked as inspected. The remainder were sold commercially before the war broke out and many would end up on Civil War battlefields on both sides, brought along by the cavalry and infantry of both state and federal troops. This one has a small personal touch in the form of a mother of pearl inlay on the right side of the grip.
The overall condition is good. The iron parts have a gray patina. The markings are legible. The numbers match. The grips are in good shape. The bore is clean with good rifling. The action could use some tinkering as Starrs sometimes do, being an early double action they have been known to be a little finicky!
