About Us: Two Sons Trading Company is a family-owned business, which imports side-by-side shotguns from England. All of our guns have been carefully inspected by an independent gunsmith formerly associated with Holland and Holland. Each gun has undergone a full strip, clean and repair service, and has been test fired by the gunsmith. Each gun is accompanied by an invoice from the gunsmith detailing the work done to the gun. Our goal is to offer fine shotguns that you can purchase with confidence.

Description:
For your consideration is an ALEX MARTIN 12-BORE BOXLOCK EJECTOR, serial no. 6898, with 28in. nitro-proved barrels. The rib is engraved 'ALEX MARTIN. 25. EXCHANGE SQUARE. GLASGOW.'.  The gun features 2 1/2in. chambers, chokes are bored approx. 1/4 and 1/2 according to the British nomenclature (decimal inside-diameter measurements of the chokes below), chopper-lump barrels, automatic safety, beaded border and acanthus scroll engraving throughout on a bright brushed-finish action.  Stock length of pull is 14 1/4in. and weight is 6lb. 8oz.  Trigger pulls have been regulated to 4lbs on the front trigger, and 5 lbs on the rear.  The gun is a standard Anson-and Deeley action, with fore-end-housed Southgate-patent ejectors.

This gun has just been completely mechanically overhauled by an English gunmaker, and has not been used since. Inside it is in like-new mechanical condition.  I have provided a copy of the work invoice, with personal and bank details blacked out, to confirm this.  You can see the Norfolk, UK, address of the gunmaker in the top left corner of the invoice, and the gun is referenced by its serial number.  I have also blacked out the details of another gun on the same invoice.  Moreover, the gun has been demonstrated to be in proof.  The barrel bluing is overall in very good condition, and the woodwork is lovely with nice fine checkering and drop points on a moderately-figured piece of walnut. Wood to metal fit is excellent.  There is a small, but almost invisible repair performed on the woodwork at the head.  The quality of the gun is evident throughout, and under the right care, will give decades more service.

This is a very lively, quick-handling gun, which feels and handles more like a 20-bore.  It would be a joy to carry on a day in the coverts, and comes up almost effortlessly. It was very likely made for fast grouse shooting on the moors, and Alex Martin had a well-earned reputation for top-quality, lively guns, and were best known for their ribless models.  Scottish gun makers were often seen as being a cut above their other British contemporaries. It would make an excellent ruffed grouse or woodcock gun.  It is ready and safe to shoot, and needs no work done to it.

2.5" shells are readily available from several suppliers.

I purchased this gun from the UK, and had it overhauled there by an indepedent gunmaker/gunsmith formerly affiliated with Holland and Holland. Essentially, the gun has been brought up to a like-new mechanical standard by a world-class craftsman.  I purchase all my guns for re-sale from the UK because it is illegal to sell a gun there that is out of proof, so the buyer is protected by law from purchasing an unsafe or un-use-able shotgun.  Moreover, they have world-class gunsmiths who perform outstanding work.  As long as you continue to maintain this gun to its present standard by having it professionally cleaned and lubricated every year, it will continue to function without fault well into the future.  There is nothing else which would need to be done.  Everything has been inspected, and brought up to standard.

The recent maintainence regime performed on this gun was as follows:

1) Completely dissassembled and all metal work boiled in a specially-formulated solution to deep clean and raise any rust down to the smallest crevice.

2) Every part was checked over for soundness, and then all parts were polished and lubricated.

3) The action was tightened, and barrel and fore-end fit were regulated.

4) Bores, chambers and chokes were lapped and polished.

5) Front trigger re-regulated to 4 lbs.

As is the English custom, the gun was then fired 50 times by the gunsmith to verify that all work was done properly.  The gun has not been fired since.

The gun-making firm of Alex Martin was founded in Paisley, Scotland, in 1837, then took up residence in Glasgow first at Old Trongate, then Argyle Street, and finally to its last premises at Exchange Square.  By the 1880s, Alex Martin rose to prominence not only in the making of shotguns, but also as a premier regulator of full-bore target and match rifles, ultimately producing award-winning rifles based on the Lee-Metford and Lee-Enfield actions, which earned many titles at Bisley shooting grounds.  Their other specialty was quick-handling shotguns, exemplified by their "Martin Rib-less" model, which dispensed with top and bottom ribs, shedding a quarter of a pound off the traditional game gun, and removed a potential source of rusting under the ribs.

Ultimately, Alex Martin was incorporated into the firm of John Dickson about 1970, and is still trading under the umbrella of John Dickson and Son, founded in Edinburgh in 1820, making it Scotland's oldest gunmaker and celebrating 200 years of fine Scottish gunmaking in 2020. Over the years, this company has grown to incorporate some of the finest Scottish gunmaking names into one gun making business - James MacNaughton and Sons, Alexander Henry, Daniel Fraser, Alex Martin and Mortimer and Son.  If you should wish, you can contact them to determine the provenance of the gun.
