#728115, Webley & Scott Ltd, 28 Bore, Birmingham, England: A SxS Model 728 Game Gun Made in 1972 for the American Market, 25" Ejector Dovetail Lump barrels at .551 .010 & .026" (Skt.II & Full), 2 3/4" chambers, Concave rib, Birmingham Nitro Proved at 3 1/4 tons per square inch in 1972, Double triggers, Splinter forend with a frontal Anson release, Straight hand stock at 14 1/8 x 1 7/16 x 2 1/4" over a full face checkered butt, Slight Cast-Off for the right hand, 28 bore weight at 5 lbs. 7 oz., Excellent wood with excellent black/brown contrast, Much better wood than most Model 728's, 80% coverage of period scroll, Unused initial escutcheon in the stock line, Harrington & Richardson import and so marked on the left barrel. The gun retains 99% original barrel blue, 99% original case colors, the wood is at 98% and the checkering is 100%. The blue on the floorplate, trigger guard, trigger guard tang and forend metal is 100%, The bores are new from breech to muzzle, The gun is smack on the face with plenty of bite. The whole is cased in a leather trimmed trunk case with most of the accessories. This is flat out one excellent plus conditioned gun for you 28 game gun users.
Webley & Scott and W & C Scott is one of the best-known names in the British sporting gun trade. They made a lot of guns but also produced some very high-quality pieces. Right at 85,000 double guns were made by Webley & Scott from 1897 to 1979. They provided a lot of semi-finished and finished guns to nearly everyone in the trade. P. (Philip) Webley set up shop in 1838 and William Scott had started in 1834, in 1897 they joined and became Webley & Scott. Under that name they made guns until 1979 and then it again became W & C Scott. In 1985 Holland & Holland acquired the name and I believe the last Scott made was in 1991. Anyone who has shot or hunted with an English boxlock, regardless of the name on the gun, most likely has shot a Webley rifle or smoothbore.
